The Original Athens on Woodward Ave.
Before the Renovation
Grand River Ave., East Lansing, Mich.
The world's greatest bookstore, Jocundry's Books, was knocked down in the summer of 2001 to make room for...something boring no doubt. The demolition uncovered these wonderful ghost signs on the side of the building next door (Curious Books). Vernors Ginger Ale ("Aged 4 years in wood") is the drink of choice for most of us expatriate Michiganders. I haven't seen the Vernors gnome for decades, but what a treat to see him wearing an MSU Spartans helmet! Also note the ad for "Michigan State College" supplies, which dates the sign to sometime between 1926 and 1955. This picture was taken by Brenda while she was standing on MAC Ave., an acronym for "Michigan Agricultural College" the school's name from 1909 until 1926. Grand River Ave. is on Brenda's right, and the MSU Union building is directly across Grand River.
