James River H.S. Regatta 5/10/2025

FamilySports

It was a beautiful day yesterday when I went to Fountainhead Regional Park on the Occoquan River to see grandson Nick’s crew team compete in the Virginia State Rowing Championships. I’ve never seen a regatta before, and watching these beautiful boats shoot down the river is both idyllic, and exciting at the same time. The James River (High School) Rapids were in two races. In the morning’s event, they came in second place which earned them an afternoon race. In both races, the team would be a bit behind and then a hundred yards or so before the finish line, they would pull the oars even harder and shoot past the nearest boat foot by foot until they were ahead. It was very exciting. I was exhausted just watching them! Click the first picture to enlarge, then run though them.

Soccer in Richmond

Nick moving the ball

We went to Richmond Saturday to see Brian, Susan, Dane, Nick, Lily, and Luna.  It was a beautiful day, sunny and about 65-70 degrees.  Nick had an afternoon soccer game, and it turns out Nick and his team are teriffic!  They shutout the opposition 5-0!  After that we went into Richmond and had a late lunch/early dinner at  Legend’s Brewpub.  Oktoberfest beer and jambalaya – Yum! Here a few pics, and a video of Lily.  All in all, it was a perfect day!  Click on the first thumbnail below to run through them all.

Last Thursday 6/13/2019 grandson Julian and his team the Mountville (PA) White Sox began their championship tournament. I was there for the first 3 games. Ultimately, they played 6 games and came in 2nd place. Go Sox! Here are a few pics of the first 3 games. Click on the first one to embiggen, then click to the right to run through them.

Nick: Soccer Star!

Nick taking the ball down the field

Grandson Nick was recently selected to play on an elite travel soccer team, so Brenda and I went down to Richmond to watch Nick play one of his last YMCA soccer games before he he moves up to the big leagues.  Today, his team dominated.  After the game, we went over to nearby a restaurant called “Fest,” a German Beer Garden with many wonderful draft German beers, sausages, pretzels and other great German fare; perfect for 9 year olds and their parents.  Dane took command of the community chalk board at the restaurant and a splendid time was had by all.

Julian’s First Soccer Game

With one practice under their belts, Team Green had their first game the very next day. And even thought the temperature was over 100 degrees, they won easily, scoring many more goals that Team Blue.  The first score of the game came about 25 seconds after the game started.  Julian took the ball, and just went up the field and scored.  After the game, the team celebrated with the traditional water and orange slices.

Not So Rosy

SportsYelling at my TeeVee

Stayed up until about midnight watching the Spartans blow their lead in the championship game and lose out on a trip to Pasadena. So my question is what was any MSU player doing within even 40 yards of the punter?

Besides the end result, I was also disgusted with the Fox sports announcers.  I want sports announcers that inform and don’t get all shouty and over-excited, like Fox News/Politics announcers. But, working for Fox, they probably can’t help it.

Anyway, stupid Spartans.

On a happy note, Gabe and Erin get married today!  More on that later…

The Kings of October!

Heart AttacksSportsYelling at my TeeVee

Wow! Just wow!  A blocked field goal, a safety by rule, going for and getting 2 points after TD, then with game tied 31-31, a Hail Mary with 4 seconds left, and “upon further review…” I was just sitting in a chair watching the game drinking a Belgian ale, and I was exhausted! And I probably had several heart attacks.

So MSU upsets #6 Wisconsin!  Last week  MSU upsets Michigan.  Week before that  MSU upsets Ohio State.  I know, next week is Nebraska, but for the Kings of October…who knows?  They might just pull out another one – any given Saturday. Here are some highlights.

UPDATE: Highlights gone.

Used to be that this weather widget would display your weather, that is, the weather of whoever hits the page anywhere in the WORLD! But sadly, due to DOGE cuts I assume, it now only displays the weather of Washington DC. So it’s only of use to me and 678,000 other people. Sad. ELON! <shakes fist at sky>
